TWO BOOKS PUBLISHED DURING THE U.S. CIVIL WAR

Dear Son,

We are blessed to include in our library's U.S. Civil War section the following two books which were actually published during the 1861-1865 war:

Down in Tennessee, and back by way of Richmond, fiction by Edmund Kirke, a pseudonym for abolitionist James R Gilmore.  Published in 1864 by Carleton (New York).

and

The True Story of the Barons of the South; or, The Rationale of the American Conflict, non-fiction by E.W. Reynolds.  Published in 1862 by Walker, Wise and Co. (Boston).

Son, it is always special to hold old objects that have survived the passage of time.  Here are some images:

Down in Tennessee...

The True Story of the Barons of the South...

Son, someday you can hold these books as you mark the 200th year anniversary of their publications.  At such point in time, do remember your Mom and Dad, and how we've felt one of the greatest gifts we could impart to you is the love of reading.

Love,

Mom and Dad
